The Operator's Backroom #002 - Where the Heck does this Live??
A practical guide for getting all of that good company info out of people’s heads, DMs, Slacks, and random docs.
👀 What you’ll leave with:
✅ A simple framework for deciding where company information should live
✅ A way to separate conversation, action, and long-term company knowledge
✅ The questions I use to find communication gaps when I first join a team
✅ A downloadable Notion worksheet to audit your own communication architecture
Before we get into the template...
In the first few weeks with a new company, I ask a lott of real annoying questions.
“Where does that live?”
“Okay, but where would I find it?”
“Who updates that?”
“What happens after this meeting?”
“Wait. So that decision is only in this Slack thread?”
(I really am delightful.)
I ask because one of the fastest ways to understand how a company actually operates is to follow the information.
How it literally moves, not how the founder TELLS me information moves.
There is usually a pretty big difference.
The founder might tell me:
“We keep everything in Notion.”
Then I talk to the team. And the answers are really more like:
“Oh, I usually just ask Sarah.”
“We have a doc somewhere.”
“I think that’s in Slack.”
“Maybe Jira?”
“Let me find the link.”
Boom. There it is.
That’s the real “system”
.
